Building Permits Granted

Between the beginning of January and the end of December 2006 the planning and building control authorities granted a total of 135 391 building permits on the territory of the Czech Republic, which is 7 550 permits down on the corresponding period of 2005.

There were 74 280 building permits granted for buildings in total (i.e. + 638 year-on-year) of which residential buildings accounted for 49 777 permits (+ 1 803) and non-residential buildings for 24 503 ( 1 165).

The number of building permits granted for constructions for environmental protections was 25 779 which translates into a decrease of 7 912.

The number of building permits granted for other constructions amounted to 35 332, which is by 276 less than in the corresponding period of 2005.

Of the total 135 391 building permits, 71 318 was granted for new construction (52.7%) and 64 073 for renewals and enhancements (47.3%).

Territorially, rather high investment activities are expected in the Středočeský Region (18.5%), Jihomoravský Region (13.5%) and the Moravskoslezský Region (8.7%), which is in contrast to the lowest construction activities expected in the Karlovarský Region (2.8%), the Liberecký Region (3.7%) and Pardubický Region (4.1%).

There were 49 777 building permits granted for residential buildings: 18 448 of them for new construction (37.1%) and 31 329 for renewals and enhancements (62.9%) . Most of them were granted in the Středočeský Region (17.7%), the Jihomoravský Region (13.5%) and the Moravskoslezský Region (9.4%). 7 265 building permits issued on the territory of the capital city of Prague make up 14.6%, of which 3.2% account for new construction.

The buildings, which were given a go-ahead for the start of construction from January till December, are supposed to provide 79 828 dwellings throughout the Czech Republic. New construction should provide 36 556 dwellings (45.8%; 35 929 and 627 dwellings in residential and non-residential buildings, respectively). Renewals and enhancements resulting in dwellings should be provide 7 191 dwellings (9.0%; 5 636 in residential buildings and 1 55 in non-residential buildings). Total 43 747 new dwellings. The other renewals and enhancements (i.e. those that do not produce new dwellings) should result in 36 081 reconstructed dwellings (45.2%).

The planning and building control authorities permitted the construction of buildings with floor space 9 180449 m2 (+ 15.5%), of which 4 763 292 m2 was in residential buildings (+ 7.2%) and 4 417 157 m2 in non-residential buildings (+ 26.1%). A floor space of 8 576 634 m2 was obtained in new constructions and 603 815 m2 by renewals and enhancements.


The approximate value of the constructions, for the commencement of which the planning and building control authorities granted building permits by the end of December, amounts to CZK 360 945 million at current prices, which translates into an increase of CZK 35 121 million on the corresponding period of 2005.

A total of CZK 238 887 million (an increase of CZK 33 012 million year-on-year, i.e. + 16.0%) should be spent on construction of buildings, of which CZK 111 444 million on residential buildings (by CZK 14 185 million more) and CZK 127 443 million on non-residential ones (+ CZK 18 827 million).

A total of CZK 27 127 million should be invested in constructions for environmental protection - i.e. by CZK 1 294 million less than in the corresponding period of 2005.

The approximate value for the other constructions amounts to CZK 94 931 million - an increase of CZK 3 403 million on the corresponding period of 2005.
