Building Permits Granted

Between the beginning of January and the end of June 2004 the planning and building control authorities granted a total of 71 075 building permits on the territory of the Czech Republic, which is 7 490 permits up on the corresponding period of 2003.

There were 39 395 building permits granted for buildings in total (i.e. + 2 768 year-on-year) of which residential buildings accounted for 25 400 permits (+ 1 579) and non-residential buildings for 13 995 (+ 1 189).

The number of building permits granted for constructions for environmental protections was 14 772, which translates into an increase of 1 010.

The number of building permits granted for other constructions amounted to 16 908, which is by 3 712 more than in the corresponding period of 2003.


Of the total 71 075 building permits, 33 955 was granted for new construction (47.8%) and 37 120 for renewals and enhancements (52.2%).

Territorially, rather high investment activities are expected in the Středočeský Region (18.0%), Jihomoravský Region (13.0%) and the capital city of Prague (8.9%), which is in contrast to the lowest construction activities expected in the Karlovarský Region (2.7%), the Liberecký Region (3.8%), the Pardubický and Zlínský Region (4.5%).

There were 25 400 building permits granted for residential buildings: 8 180 of them for new construction and 17 220 for renewals and enhancements. Most of them were granted in the Středočeský Region (17.6%), the Jihomoravský Region (12.3%) and the Moravskoslezský Region (8.3%). 4 002 building permits issued on the territory of the capital city of Prague make up 15.8%, of which 4.2% account for new construction. 67.8% of the building permits granted of the total comes under renewals and enhancements.

The buildings, which were given a go-ahead for the start of construction in January and June, are supposed to provide 32 233 dwellings throughout the Czech Republic. New construction should provide 14 859 dwellings (46.1%; 14 615 and 244 dwellings in residential and non-residential buildings, respectively). Renewals and enhancements resulting in dwellings should be provide 4 837 dwellings (15.0%; 3 323 in residential buildings and 1 514 in non-residential buildings). Total 19 696 new dwellings. The other renewals and enhancements (i.e. those that do not produce new dwellings) should result in 12 537 reconstructed dwellings (38.9%).

The approximate value of the constructions, for the commencement of which the planning and building control authorities granted building permits by the end of June, amounts to CZK 141 106 million at current prices, which translates into an increase of CZK 11 396 million on the corresponding period of 2003.

A total of CZK 87 336 million (a decrease of CZK 2 920 million year-on-year, i.e. – 3.2%) should be spent on construction of buildings, of which CZK 44 017 million on residential buildings (by CZK 5 085 million more) and CZK 43 319 million on non-residential ones (- CZK 8 005 million).

A total of CZK 11 773 million should be invested in constructions for environmental protection - i.e. by CZK 1 426 million more than in the corresponding period of 2003.

The approximate value for the other constructions amounts to CZK 41 997 million - a rise of CZK 12 890 million on the corresponding period of 2003.
