Czech Demographic Handbook
Preface | Contents |
In 2004, 85 years have passed since the Act No. 49/1919 Coll. of laws and regulations on organisation of statistical service was passed. By this act, which was approved by the National Assembly shortly after the birth of the independent Czechoslovak Republic, the State Statistical Office was established. On the occasion of the 85th anniversary of Czech (originally Czechoslovak) statistics, the Czech Statistical Office issues the 2004 Czech Demographic Handbook.
The basic scheme of today’s content structure results from the previous demographic handbooks and was designed by a long-term manager of the state statistical service and a leading Czech demographer at the same time, Mr Vladimír Srb, who initiated some of the previous publications of the Handbook and participated in their preparation, too.
The Handbook contains information not only for the 85-year period; it includes also retrospective data from 1785 to 1918, which were reconstructed by Mr Vladimír Srb and Mr Milan Kučera.
The 2004 Czech Demographic Handbook was elaborated by a team of experts from the Population Development Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) with invaluable help of a former CZSO manager, demographer Mr Milan Aleš.
The data presented in the Handbook are only a small part of the large database, which was created by the Czech demographic statistics. Much richer information is provided by basic publications on the results of demographic statistics, especially source works “... Demographic Yearbook” that have been issued continually since 1919, thematic publications of the Czech Statistical Office and, of course, numerical and analytical publications from detailed results of individual Population and Housing Censuses.
Most pieces of information provided here are available to the interested also at the CZSO’s websites (www.czso.cz).
