Basic Demographic Indicators for Territorial Administrative Units of the Czech Republic

Methodology

Contents

The tables in the Demographic Yearbooks in the respective time periods contain data on the republic (or the Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia), lands, regions, councils, districts (juridical, political, administrative) and selected municipalities (cities). Territorial delimitation of current district does not correspond to the former districts. Categorization of the former district to the current ones therefore does not mean that the figures are recalculated into current territorial structure. Former districts are categorized to the current ones according to the central municipality of the district.

From 1919 till 1927 were stated data on the capital of Prague, 15 regions and juridical districts.

From 1928 till 1935 were stated data on 104 political districts in Bohemia (incl. the capital of Prague) and 47 political districts in Moravia and Silesia. Each political district included 1-4 juridical districts. Some juridical districts were divided into different political districts.

In 1936 were additionally stated data on two newly emerged political districts (Hořice and Zlín), in 1937 on further three districts (Beroun, Bílina and Nymburk). Then, there were 108 political districts in Bohemia and 48 political districts in Moravia and Silesia.

From 1938 till 1944 the data exclude German state citizens and cover only the territory of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (i.e. without the occupied borderland). In 1938 till 1940 were stated data on 17 councils, containing 95 political districts and juridical districts. In 1941-1944 were stated data on 7 councils, containing 71 political districts and the capital Prague.

In 1945 and 1946 were data stated separately for Czech and German nationality (the later highlighted by small spaced font). The territorial structure as of 29 September 1938 (prior to the Munich Agreement) was restored with small changes. Data were stated for 114 administrative districts in Bohemia (incl. the capital of Prague) and for 48 administrative districts in Moravia and Silesia. Administrative districts were divided into juridical districts.

In 1947, after establishment of one new district (Lanškroun), there were 115 administrative districts in Bohemia.

From 1949 till 1959 were stated data on the capital of Prague and 13 regions, containing 181 districts. After cancellation of the district Jáchymov in 1952, the number of district has been reduced by one. In 1954, eleven original districts (those with a large city) were divided (each to the "city district" and to the "suburb district"), resulting to the number of district 191 in 1954 till 1959.

From 1960 till 1995 were stated data on the capital of Prague and 7 regions, containing 75 districts (NUTS4). After establishment of the district Jeseník in 1996, the number of districts was 76.

Since 2000 the number of regions has changed to 13 (NUTS3 regions), the structure of districts (NUTS4) remains unchanged.

An item of interest of the publication are the data on districts, namely juridical districts in 1919-1927, political or administrative districts later, and since 1950 the districts (without specification), currently NUTS4.

The publication is structured according to current regions and districts, separately for years 1919-1948 and for years 1949-2005. Former districts (before 1960) are categorized to the current ones according to the central municipality of the district. Districts of former central municipalities that have disappeared are categorized according to the name of the municipality, into which the disappeared municipality has been integrated, with the preservation of the original name.

Exceptions to this rule are the former districts of Praha-venkov, Praha-venkov-sever, Praha-venkov-jih, Praha-jih, Praha-sever, Plzeň-venkov and Plzeň-okolí, which were categorized under current districts of Praha-východ and Plzeň-jih. Therefore, no districts were categorized under current district of Praha-západ for period 1919-1948.

In 1919-1942 the Demographic Yearbooks has not stated the mid-year population, it has been recalculated from the relative figures on marriages, divorces, births, deaths and natural increase related to the number of population. Estimated numbers were adjusted to fit the total number of population in the Republic (Protectorate), and in this publication are highlighted by spaced font. Some of additional data published in Demographic Yearbook are not published in this publication due to the limited space.

In 2005 three municipalities were reorganised from the district Bruntál to the district Olomouc, 27 municipalities were reorganised from the district Žďár nad Sázavou to the district Brno-venkov, and one municipality was reorganised from the district Třebíč to the district Brno-venkov.

This publication corrects printing errors of previous editions and the errors additionally identified in source materials.
