Basic Demographic Indicators for Selected Towns of the Czech Republic

Methodology

Contents

Tables in source publications contain data for the republic (Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia), regions, districts (legal, administrative) and selected municipalities (towns). From 1919 till 1927 the selection of cities to which data refer was not specified any closer. From 1928 till 1985 it was usually given that it concerned towns with more than 10 000 inhabitants (since 1960 also district towns with a lower number of inhabitants are given). From 1986 till 1991 the given towns do not have any explanatory identification. Since 1992 the selection of towns is based on the competence of the given authority (former municipal people’s committee, municipal office).

Concerning towns that are in the source publication stated after the year 1971, data, which are available at the CZSO’s database of population changes for each municipality (live births, deaths, natural increase, in-migrants, out-migrants, net migration, total increase and total state as at 31 December), are added since the given year.

Cities are classified partly by regions and partly in an alphabetical order according to their current names. If there was a change of the name in the given period, the change is stated. Data for towns are always in the territorial delimitation valid for the relevant year.

Indicators that are available for the period until 1948 and since 1949 are not exactly corresponding, that is the reason for presenting them in two separate tables.

During the observed period, previously independently observed municipalities (towns) were attached to the following towns and these attached towns are given here independently, along with data for the town to which they were attached. In case of Ostrava and Frýdek Místek, during the attachment of previously independently observed municipalities (towns), a newly named town was formed (it did not concern only the change of the name of the town). In case of Frýdek-Místek and taking into consideration the time, the creation of the new name was not consistent with the integration of towns.

Děčín
For years 1919 – 1937 data refer to Podmolky. For 1945-1948 Podmolky is part of the municipality Děčín – Podmolky and since 1949 part of the municipality Děčín.

Frýdek-Místek
There is no information for either Frýdek or Místek in the source publication for 1919. In the period 1920 – 1942 data refer only to Frýdek. Since 1943 data has regularly referred to Frýdek and Místek (1943 and 1944) under the name Frýdek, for 1945 – 1949 under the name Frýdek-Místek and for 1950 – 1954 under the name Místek and since 1955 under the name Frýdek-Místek.

Karlovy Vary
Data are given for Rybáře for the period 1919-1920 and 1931-1937. During the occupation Rybáře was part of Karlovy Vary. After the war it was independent, however there was no data in the source publication. Since 1948 Rybáře has been part of the municipality Karlovy Vary, it is not possible to find out from the source publication whether it was included in the data for Karlovy Vary already for the year 1947 (probably yes).

Kladno
Data refer to Kročehlavy for the period 1919 – 1940. Since 1941 Kročehlavy was a part of the municipality Kladno. After the war it was independent, however there was no data in the source publication. Since 1948 Kročehlavy has been part of Kladno but it is not possible to find out from the source publications whether it was included in the data for Kladno already for the year 1947 (probably yes).

Ostrava
For 1919-1944 the following are given as independent towns of the current part of Ostrava, in 1919-1920 Mariánské Hory, Moravská Ostrava, Přívoz, Slezská Ostrava, Vítkovice, for 1921-1924 also Zábřeh nad Odrou, for 1925-1940 Moravská Ostrava and Slezská Ostrava for 1941-1944 only Moravská Ostrava. Only since 1945 the current name Ostrava is stated. For 1919-1944 a summary for the stated independent towns under the name Ostrava is presented even though a city of this name did not exist in the relevant period. It concurrently does not concern a recalculation to the current territorial delimitation of the city Ostrava but a sum for the published data of the independent towns of that time. For 1955 and 1956 data are given for Poruba. Since 1957 Poruba is part of Ostrava.

Praha
Data for Modřany refer to the period 1960 – 1967. Since 1968 Modřany is part of the municipality Praha.

Teplice (for years 1919-1948 Teplice-Šanov)
Data for Trunovany refer to years 1919-1937 and 1945-1946. During the occupation Trnovany was part of the municipality Teplice- Šanov. After the war it was independent and in the source publication data was given for 1945 and 1946. Since 1948 Trnovany has been part of the municipality Teplice-Šanov.

For 1919-1942 data for mid-year population is not stated in the source publications. However, relative data calculated from the number of marriages, divorces, births, deaths and natural increase per 1 000 inhabitants are given. Using individual relative data, data on a rough number of inhabitants were calculated and then an average from these rough numbers of inhabitants was calculated for the relevant city and year. Thus, the calculated average mid-year population is presented in this publication as the mid-year population.

Apart from data on natural and migration movements of inhabitants in the source publications also data on number of marriages, divorces and abortions are presented. Data on the number of marriages are for the whole observed period. Data on the number of divorces (and separations) refer to years 1919-1940. Selection of towns, for which data on divorces are stated, is not the same as the selection of towns for which different data are given. In the following years data on divorces are not given, again they were available since 1950 (for Brno, Praha, Ostrava and Plzeň also for 1949 and these are separations). Since 1971 data on abortions are published in the source publications, from the total number in the period 1971-1986 data on induced abortions on request were published and since 1987 data on induced abortions.

More detailed methodical instructions to individual indicators are in the relevant source publications.

For 1945 and 1946, two types of data are given here and also in the source publications; individually for population without inhabitants of German nationality and independently for German nationality population.

Spaced letters are used for data, which are not directly stated in the source publications but were calculated from other data in the source publications.
