Production, Treatment, Utilisation and Disposal of Waste in 2002

1. Generation of waste
The statistical survey established that the total generation of waste in the CR in 2002 had been 28.2 million tonnes, of which 25.0 million tonnes was generated by the activity
of enterprises. Total generation of hazardous waste amounted to 1.3 million tonnes. Table 1 gives the generation of waste by chosen CZ-NACE divisions, while Graph 1 gives the generation for these divisions per capita.
Given the fact that Act No. 185/2001 Coll. introduces new definitions of some basic concepts from the area of waste management, it is impossible to fully compare the presented data
on generated waste with those for the previous years. However, a certain comparison of waste generated by enterprises can be made, e.g. for recycling which was getting better compared
to the previous year: 21.9% of total waste generation and 6.2% of the total generation
of hazardous waste (1 290 thousand) was recycled in 2002. Another comparison can be made for incineration of hazardous waste: the amount of hazardous waste incinerated in 2002 corresponded to 4.7% of the total annual generation of hazardous waste, while the year 2001 saw only 1.9% of the annual generation incinerated. The most frequent method of waste disposal continued to be landfill: 20% of the annual generation of waste was land filled
in 2002.
2. Waste management
The statistical survey showed that 26.1 million tonnes of waste had been handled in 2002. This amount includes the waste generated in the reference year plus waste taken from stores
for handling. Of this total, recycling or disposal was established for 24.5 million tonnes.
A total of 1.9 million tonnes was passed by the reporting units to other units outside the population under the survey. Table 4 gives recycling operations or disposal methods for the generated, stored and handed-over waste used by the waste producer or recipient.
The statistical survey suggests that enterprises expended a total of CZK 14.1 billion
on management of all waste (i.e. generated, received from other firms, and taken from stores) in 2002, of which costs of treatment, recycling and disposal of hazardous waste amounted to CZK 2.1 billion.
3. Waste generated within municipalities
Municipalities reported waste generation amounting to 3.2 million tonnes (279 kg per inhabitant), of which the generation of municipal and trade wastes (Group 20 of the Waste List) was 2.8 million tonnes (254 kg per inhabitant). Other kinds of waste reported by the municipalities particularly comprised construction waste (mainly the aftermath of the August 2002 floods), wastewater treatment waste, and other waste classified outside Group 20.
4. Consumption of waste as secondary raw material
The established consumption of chosen wastes as secondary raw material for manufacturing selected products in measured enterprises (glassworks, metallurgical work, construction companies, etc.) was 3.6 million tonnes in 2002 – i.e. 0.9 million tonnes up on 2001.
The highest percentage of the waste used as secondary raw material was observed in iron scrap and excavated earth (landscaping).
