A. CULTURE Statistics presented in this Chapter refer to the activities of theatres, cinemas, musical ensembles, libraries, museums, galleries, observatories, planetariums, and the press, and are acquired from departmental statistical reports of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and other information sources. Included in this Chapter are also figures on zoos reported by the Union of Czech and Slovak Zoological Gardens and on caves reported by the Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection. The figures on university libraries are taken over from documents prepared by the Institute for Information on Education. The State Statistical Service also uses outputs from departmental statistical information systems, which are processed by the Information and Advisory Centre for Local Culture, Prague. The tabular figures are either related to the end of year (e.g., numbers of theatres, cinemas, libraries, galleries) or they are annual aggregates (e.g., number of performances, attendance, published books). Data on radio and television broadcasting are collected by state statistical questionnaires. Data on state establishments also include data on establishments of municipalities and regions. Notes on tables Table 22-1. State theatres The network of theatres is measured by the indicator "Theatres in permanent operation"; one theatre administration (administrative unit) can control several theatres. Theatre buildings and halls, which are used by regional theatres as tour stages only and which are not directly administered by a theatre, are excluded. Table 22-4. Cinemas "Cinemas, total" includes cinemas operated all the year round, including cinema-cafés and film clubs with separate halls, irrespective of ownership. 'Attendance' includes actual persons - both adults and children. The figures are taken over from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. Tables 22-10 to 22-12. Libraries Libraries of all types constitute a homogeneous system. Measured are public libraries, scientific libraries and university libraries. For all the types of libraries, the indicator "Loans, total" refers to loans of all library stock units (books, periodicals and other documents) used in and outside the library. A library stock unit is each separate volume of a book, a complete volume or several issues of a periodical bound or inserted in a folder, each separate map, graphic sheet, record, etc. Other documents include, for instance, magnetic tapes, microfilm rolls, photocopies, microfiches and the like. On 1 January 2002, the running of the state scientific libraries was passed from the Ministry of Culture of the CR to the administrative regions, and now these libraries are run as regional libraries. The National Library and the Moravian Land Library are still run by the Ministry of Culture of the CR.
The data published in the tables are comparable with the data published in the Statistical Yearbooks for the previous years. * * *
More detailed information obtained from departmental statistical information systems of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport of the CR is available in the following CZSO publication brought out in accordance with the CZSO Catalogue of Publications 2003 (group 3 - LABOUR, SOCIAL STATISTICS, subgroup 33 - Education, Culture, Public Health): - “Kulturní zařízení v roce 2002”, June 2003.
B. SPORT Approximately 15% of the Czech Republic's population is estimated to have been members of civic physical education and sports associations since 1995. Figures on physical education and sports are taken over from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic. Notes on tables Table 22-17. State budget grants to civic associations of physical education and sports for public schemes Listed are data for twelve most important civic associations of physical education and sports. The item "Other" shows grants provided to another ten to twelve smaller civic associations of physical education and sports every year. Tables 22-24. and 22-25.State/local budget expenditure on culture and sport: 2002 The figures on expenditures from the state budgets and local budgets (budgets of municipalities and district offices) on culture and sports are based on data from financial statements on income and expenditure of budgetary organisations. The data are provided to the CZSO by the Ministry of Finance of the Czech Republic. They respect the functional breakdown of expenditure and include expenditure in divisions 33 (Culture, churches and mass media) and 34 (Physical education and leisure activity) of the budget classification detailed as shown in the legend of the tables. The arrangement of the table headings corresponds to the budget classification by kind. |
