Metodology - Tourism of women and men

The source of data on inbound (domestic) and outbound tourism of residents of the Czech Republic is a Tourism Sample Survey (TSS). The survey is carried out in a randomly selected sample of households and persons aged 15+ years are enquired. Data on private trips (with the purpose to spend leisure time, to recreate, to improve health, to visit relatives or friends) and on business trips, which took place during the last three months, are surveyed among all members of a household. Using weight coefficients, survey results are grossed up to the population of 15+ years and for that age group they are also published.

The survey does not cover persons living in collective accommodation establishments for a long time. To tourism are included trips to places just outside the respondent's usual environment (outside the respondent's permanent or temporary residence, workplace, school, etc.). In accordance with the

international methodology, only those trips whose duration did not exceed 12 months are counted in tourism.

Inbound (domestic) tourism represents trips and stays of residents in the domestic environment (here in the Czech Republic) outside their usual environment.

Outbound tourism is the travel and stays of residents abroad.

A long trip is a private trip, at which a person stayed overnight for at least 4 successive nights outside his or her usual environment.

A short trip is a private trip (including weekend stays), at which a person stayed overnight at least for 1 night and for 3 successive nights as a maximum outside his or her usual environment.

In terms of the type of accommodation the overnight stay refers to overnight accommodation in a collective accommodation establishment or private accommodation, paid or unpaid, i.e. including an overnight stay at an own holiday home or at relatives or friends or in the open air, sleeping accommodation in a means of transport during the trip, and the like.

A business trip is a trip of a business/working character outside the usual environment with at least one overnight stay (it includes: congresses, conferences, fairs and exhibitions, business meetings, company missions, and the like).
