Mezi ideálem a realitou: současný pokles porodnosti očima české populace

Abstract
Although in 2021 Czechia still had one of the highest fertility rates in Europe, it is currently experiencing a significant decline in fertility and uncertainty about its future development. This paper analyses the current reproductive desires and intentions of women and men in Czechia, the ideal timing of parenthood, and the factors influencing the fertility decline. Data for this analysis are from the Paths to Parenthood survey collected in October 2024 by NMS Market Research (N=800, ages 18–49). The majority of the population (74%) still desire two children, with the ideal age to become a parent perceived to be before age 30. However, realistic intentions remain lower, especially among men, owing to economic uncertainty, unaffordable housing, and a lack of government support. The younger generation tend to see barriers such as the absence of a partner, the time demands of caring for children, and other opportunities for self-fulfilment than parenthood.
