Economic Results of Transport and Communications in 2000-2004

Results of annual statistical surveys (the so-called structural statistics) point to an increasing significance of tertiary sphere in the Czech economy. This fully applies to transport and communications; among other things the development of value added and the number of employed persons in 2000-2004 gives evidence of this. While in the year 2000 transport and communications contributed to the value added of the business sphere by 9.6%, in 2004 it was already almost 11%. In the same period also the number of persons employed in these divisions increased from 8.6% to 8.8%.

Transport and communications showed in many indicators a dynamic growth compared to 2000. For example, sales increased from CZK 444 billion to more than CZK 597 billion in 2004, which meant an average growth rate of 8.7%. Value added increased by 54.6% during the same period and reached CZK 187.1billion. Since the value added grew faster than the number of employed persons (in 2004 there were almost 343 thousand employed persons registered, by 0.3% more than in 2000) labour productivity measured by value added per worker rose by 54.1% and exceeded the growth of average wage almost by 24 percentage points. The number of employees in 2004 compared to 2000 decreased by 0.9% whereas the number of entrepreneurs increased by more than 8%. The share of women among entrepreneurs made 15.4%, among employees 32.7%. Typical for transport and communications is that in the set of enterprises structured according to the size, small businesses with 0 to 19 employees prevail (in 2004 there were 98%) and these employ approximately 26% of the total working persons but only 15% of employees. When comparing the value added per one worker in different sized enterprises, the most effective were in 2004 enterprises with 100 and more employees.

In 2004, transport, which is in terms of volume the most important, contributed to the total value added of the whole division of transport and communications by 58.3%, to total sales by more than 76% and total employment almost by 81%. Book value added per worker increased in 2004 by almost 72 % compared to 2000 and average wage by 29.8%. The distribution of employees in individual size groups of enterprises was the following: there were 11% of employees in enterprises with 1-9 employees, nearly 30% in enterprises with 10-249 employees, 59% in enterprises with 250 and more employees of the total number of employees in transport.

The dynamically developing communications contributed to the total employment in transport and communications by nearly 20% in 2004, however its share in total sales made up almost 25% and in value added more than 41%. The value added increased from CZK 59 billion to almost CZK 78 billion in 2004, which represented a 32% increase. As the number of employed persons dropped by more than 7% during the same period, labour productivity grew by 42%. The distribution of employees in individual size groups of enterprises was the following: there were 1.2% of employees in enterprises with 1-9 employees, nearly 8.6% in enterprises with 10-249 employees and 93% of the total number of employees in communications worked in enterprises with more than 250 employees (which contribute to the total sales of the division by more than 90%).
