Guests at Collective Tourist Accomodation Establishments - Detailed Results
Methodology | Contents |
This publication contains detailed results of the monthly survey of guests at accommodation establishments, which we are unable to release on a monthly basis for capacity reasons. The data come from monthly sample statistical survey CR 1-12. Data presented result from submitted questionnaires incl. data imputed for accommodation establishments that failed to respond and data grossed for establishments not included in the sample. Resulting data on arrivals and overnight stays broken down by tourists’ country of residence are influenced, inter alia, by different accommodation establishments questioned, for individual establishments may be focused on a special clientele, which cannot be taken into account in the sample.
In view of economy and harmonisation of statistical surveys of tourism with international standards, the sample for 2002 was based on cumulated categories – hotels and similar accommodation establishments (of which five- and four star hotels, other hotels and boarding houses) and other mass accommodation establishments in total.
To enhance the consistency of imputed and grossed data, the following types of accommodation establishments are questioned all every year: five- and four-star hotels, establishments with more than 99 permanent beds or 499 places for tents and caravans, and other special accommodation establishments – spa establishments, agro-tourism establishments and halls of residence for students.
Experience of the 2001 survey made us carry out some changes in the methodology for 2002. In particular, an analysis was made of the 2001 sample and, as a result, better stratification was chosen to decrease sampling error. However, survey results are negatively influenced by the state of the Register of Accommodation Establishments (RAE). This register is not yet linked to any administrative source of information that would ensure automated updates. The survey provides only information on accommodation establishments winding down and not those coming into being. This situation was one of the reasons why the CZSO took a census of accommodation establishments in 2001. A system that will make updates of the RAE is being prepared.
Therefore, the results of 2002 monthly survey should be taken as preliminary and their international comparisons should be made with caution. Calculation-based indicators, such as the shares of Czech and foreign guests, the structure of foreigners, the average duration of stay, etc., are better for the evaluation of guests in accommodation establishments.
The numbers of accommodation establishments (state indicator) released in the annual publication “Capacity of Tourism Accommodation Establishments” show the situation according to the RAE as at 31 July 2002 as mentioned above.
“Guest at accommodation establishment” is each person (incl. children) who used the services of an accommodation establishment for the purpose of a temporary stay. Persons (either Czech residents or foreigners) who used these services for the purpose of employment are excluded. So that a guest can be regarded as a tourist, the duration of his/her temporary accommodation may be one year at most.
The total number of permanent beds in the accommodation establishment is used to calculate “gross bed occupancy rate”, whereas the number of beds actually available provides the basis to calculate “net bed occupancy rate”. Similarly, “room occupancy rate” is based on rooms actually available to guests.
