Foreign Tourism

Figures on arrivals of foreign visitors in the Czech Republic and departures of Czech citizens abroad are collected from the Directorate of Alien and Border Police of the Police of the Czech Republic.

On 1 May 2004, the Czech Republic became a Member State of the EU, which affected neither the methodology nor the processing of data influence.

Foreign visitors are all persons who come to the country - i.e. tourists, sameday visitors and persons in transit.

When they cross the border they are classified to three groups: Germans, Austrians, Poles and Slovaks are registered as nationals of a neighbouring country provided that they cross that part (segment) of the CR border that is also the border of their country. If they cross other sections of the CR border they are placed in the group of visitors from other countries without visa duty. Those who come from countries with visa duty make up the third group. Hence, the figures on “Foreign visitors from neighbouring countries” in Tables 1.1, 4.1 and 4.2 exclude Germans, Austrians, Polands and Slovaks who crossed other borders than those of their countries when coming to the Czech Republic.

Tables 4.1 and 4.2, the row “Airport”, break down foreign visitors into those “From countries with visa duty“ and “From other countries without visa duty” only. Since the beginning of 2004, the category of “Foreign visitors from neighbouring countries” does not exist any longer.

The number of arrivals of foreign visitors in the CR from neighbouring countries and other countries without visa duty, coming by road or rail, is expert-guessed at road or railway border crossings. Accurate numbers of foreign visitors are only given for foreign visitors from countries with visa duty.

The number of departures of Czech citizens abroad by road or rail is also expert-guessed at road or railway border crossings.
