European Statistics Day 2024

Already since 2016, 20 October has been European Statistics Day. On this day, statisticians commemorate the importance of reliable and objective data as well as the importance of statistical literacy. On this occasion, the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) prepared, for example, a statistics quiz or an exhibition of popular infographics.

“Besides objectiveness and quality, the Czech Statistical Office strives to give statistical data a comprehensible shape and to also present them in a friendly way to the general public,” Marek Rojíček, President of the Czech Statistical Office, says.

Already on Monday, 14 October, the Czech Statistical Office was visited by the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, who thus had an opportunity to get acquainted right on the spot with manifold activities of statisticians. During his visit, he stressed, among other things, the importance of independent official statistics for society.

The CZSO has also prepared a popular on-line statistics quiz (Czech only) for all those interested, consisting of 10 questions of varying difficulty and from different statistical domains, for which it is possible to choose only one correct answer from several offered options.

On Thursday, 17 October, a charity statistical brunch was held at the headquarters of the Czech Statistical Office, during which employees shared home-made delicacies while raising funds for a charity project. Employees from Regional Offices of the CZSO have also participated (remotely) and in total, almost CZK 40 000 were raised for recovery projects after the recent floods.

Last year, statisticians supported the White Circle of Safety (Bílý kruh bezpečí in Czech), which provides assistance to victims of crime, and in 2022 they contributed to humanitarian aid for war-torn Ukraine.

Right in the building of the Czech Statistical Office in Prague’s Skalka, visitors can see an exhibition of popular statistical infographics until mid-December. Infographics are very popular with the public, they are among the most popular posts on the CZSO's social networks, and are also positively evaluated by experts.

The CZSO will also mark the European Statistics Day with activity on the social networks X and Instagram.

The European Statistics Day was declared by the European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC) in 2016; it is celebrated every year on 20 October, unless the World Statistics Day, which is celebrated every 5 years, falls on 20 October. The aim of this initiative is to raise European citizens awareness of the importance and role of official statistics in society and to foster dialogue with the general public and other stakeholders.
